Weekly Shonen Jump – Update # 2 2012

13 Mar

Ok, so this past few weeks Jump has seen a range of changes, from introducing new series to putting more emphasis on new ones and to cancelling (maybe more than one) series.  Also since there is some relevant news regarding anime based on manga running in jump, I’ll add some information on that as well.

So here’s the break-down of Jump from my point of view on the 13th of March 2012: Continue reading

Weekly Shonen Jump – Update # 1 (2012)

3 Feb

Ok, so it’s no surprise that Weekly Shonen Jump is constantly picking up and dropping series, since those are the harsh realities of the industry but this post has been mainly inspired by a sudden surge of developments that will affect the state of the magazine and the series that some of us are currently enjoying.

Golden Future Cup 2011 – Results and Manga Reviews

27 Dec

The Golden Future Cup has come and gone, but it has left some interesting pieces to be judged by the readers and also a piece or two that might end up being serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump.  Some of you might be familiar with the fact that Beelzebub and Nurarihyon no Mago were winners in their respective Golden Future Cup’s and other pieces such as Muhyo and Roji’s Bureau of Supernatural Investigation debuted in the contest.

This year’s Golden Future Cup had 6 entries; all of which have a fantasy type setting, although some were aiming for different genres.

I apologize in advance, but having been able to only read 4 out of the 6 entries, I can only give my personal opinion on those and later add my opinion on the missing 2. Just because I like giving my opinion, I’m going to comment whether the ranking is deserved or not.  Also seeing as how the winner is at least guaranteed to be published in WSJ, I’m going to release a follow-up article with my thoughts on what current manga will end and how the winner should approach the serialisation of their work. Gate 7 – First Impressions and Volume 1 Review

26 Dec

Clamp’s new piece of work has it’s first volume out and is has been running monthly in Jump SQ since March this year.  The manga has already been picked up by Dark Horse for publication of English versions of the volumes and Norma Editorial for Spanish versions.

Clamp’s reputation for creating amazing works regardless of demographic has been earned for a reason; not many can keep creating hit after hit successfully since 1989, so they themselves have set the bar pretty high.

How does Gate 7 stack up? Continue reading

D.Gray-Man: Volume 2 Review

25 Dec

Straight after reading Volume 1 of D.Gray-man, I just had to keep going.  The first volume was good to read as it very nicely introduced the setting of the story, explained the powers of both good and evil and introduced the protagonist of the story; all in all a great first volume to read.

The second volume was something I was initially looking forward to reading, but after doing so I’m not so sure whether the feeling of excitement towards the series was premature or just this volume was quite a big let-down on it’s own.

So which is it? Continue reading

D.Gray-Man: Volume 1 Review

22 Dec

Okay so here’s the story – having felt quite guilty about never having paid for manga coupled with a few Amazon vouchers lying around, I decided it was time to purchase my first manga volume.  I didn’t want to go for something I had already read so I decided to buy volume 1 of D.Gray-Man.  Why? A few reasons:

1.  It’s still ongoing (even though it was moved from Weekly Shonen Jump to Jump SQ)

2.  I’ve heard great things about it

3.  It’s still one of the best selling manga in Japan, so it couldn’t have been bad

So was the first volume any good compared to other first volumes of other mangas? Continue reading

And Now For Some Romance – WSJ's Nisekoi

14 Nov

I happened to stumble upon this when I had just finished reading a chapter of Bakuman a week or so ago.  So this is a new piece that started in WSJ this month and had originally ran as a one-shot.  The author is Naoshi Komi of “Double Arts” fame, so for all of you obscure manga fans familiar with his work this next piece should be right up your alley.

So a romance manga eh? Well….. it’s a bit more than that! Continue reading

A New Mage on the Block – Weekly Shonen Jump's Magico

14 Nov

Ok so it’s been a while since I’ve reviewed something so I thought I would start again with a relatively new manga running in WSJ; Magico.  So as everyone should know Fairy Tail runs in Weekly Shonen Magazine, so it’s not a huge surprise that a manga based around wizards has finally made it’s way into Jump but the question I first asked was can I really be bothered with picking up another manga about wizards? Continue reading

Bleach 466 – Yukio's Arrogance

28 Sep

So this week we return to a continuation of the fights between the Gotei 13 and the Fullbring users.  This week chapter mainly deals with Yujio and Hitsugaya, esentially a battle of the youngsters.  Let’s review: Continue reading
